In Las Vegas on December 8th 2007 World Champion Boxer Floyd Mayweather came out of retirement to take on British challenger Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton.
Both fighters had fearsome reputations, both made the weigh-in and both were in great shape.
There was however one key difference.
In the lead up to the fight Ricky Hatton spent weeks at a training camp to get into ‘fighting shape’. He had put on over 3 stone (42lbs) through binge drinking and his punishing scheduled sought to banish the beer belly.
The Mayweather training camp was altogether different. Whislt Hatton was battling the bulge, Mayweather was refining what was already there. You see Floyd Mayweather has a different philosophy about boxing and his attitude is to “always be in fighting shape.”
Even though Hatton put up a great resistance, Mayweather went on to win the fight convincingly.
Why is this important to you?
If an opportunity to do what you always wanted came up right now, would you be able to take advantage or would you have to pass because the you didn’t feel up to it?
If that promotion you’ve been dreaming of was suddenly made available, would you feel ready to put yourself forward for it or would you back off because you weren’t ready or confident enough?
“Success is the result of opportunity meeting preparation.”
The most successful people in the world are those who continuously sharpen their skills, hone their craft and condition themselves daily to always be ready for when a chance finally arises.
The same applies if you are a business. Would you want to wait until you are challenged by a start-up who is fast, nimble and ready to take market share before you begin to innovate or make performance improvement?
Wouldn’t you rather have a business culture which is always seeking to improve, ready respond and change at short notice?
Get yourself and your business into the mentality of always being in fighting shape and avoid having to play catch up like the hitman.
