What Are Your Daily Standards?

12th May 2015 by VParmar Leave a Comment

In previous blogs and posts on various media channels, I’ve shared my belief that our daily standards and habits are the key to achieving your goals. From my own experience, it was raising my own personal standards and not setting lofty goals that has enabled me to transform my health and wellbeing,  enjoying greater success in my business and have a happier family life.

My belief in daily standards was inspired by my friend Derek Mills,  best selling author of the 10 Second Philosophy, International Speaker and the ‘go-to-guy’ on daily standards.

I asked Derek to share some of his ideas and thoughts on standards with my tribe, here it is…and it is epic.

Enjoy.

Mind The Gap – Finding Your Leverage

21st April 2015 by VParmar Leave a Comment

man standing on rock

Recently I met with successful lady who has done very well in her career but is unhappy.

She talked about how she felt frustrated, undervalued and under-utilised by her company. She explained to me she was looking for a new challenge and I could see the pain in her eyes.

So I asked what she had done so far to make the change happen.

She told me that she hadn’t done a great deal other than put her CV out to a few people.

Now, from everything she said it would appear that she had the perfect motivation but yet she wasn’t taking enough action to change her situation.

She’s not alone.

Most of us at some point have had dreams of doing something different.

Maybe a change of job? A new career? Starting a business? Perhaps taking up a new activity in your spare time?

However often we fail to take quality of action we need to make things happen – why?

How To Gain Perspective

18th March 2015 by VParmar Leave a Comment

glass-box

I don’t watch a lot of TV but recently I caught a repeat of Gordon Ramsay’s Kitchen nightmares – love or loathe him, he is certainly entertaining!

In this particular episode, a young lady called Tatiana had bought herself a restaurant or rather she had persuaded her mom and sister to put their homes and pensions on the line to fund her dream of being a restaurant owner.

Her Mom and sister had no experience of the business but Tatiana had previously worked at the restaurant…that was part of the problem.

8 Hacks For Keeping Focused and Productive

12th January 2015 by VParmar 1 Comment

Burst-your-brain

So you’ve set yourself some big goals this year and now it’s time to take action, right?

How do you make sure you don’t crash and burn?

Here are 8 brain hacks to help you stay motivated, focused and more productive in 2015.

#1 Remember why you got started in the first place.

You started this journey for a reason.

That reason was so important and so compelling to you, that it drove you to take risks and make decisions that others wouldn’t dream of.

Your body was tingly with a sense of purpose, the feeling of excitement and you were fully motivated – remember that?

The trouble with motivation is that it can quickly subside when you are faced with obstacles but installing this simple habit will not only keep you going,  but will also fuel your resiliency.

Take one sheet of A4 paper and write on it your goal.  Underneath write down all the reasons why this is so important for you. Keep it close to your bed.

Every night before you sleep and every morning when you wake, spend a few minutes to read them out aloud to yourself in the mirror

#2 Download Coffitivity.

This is one of my favourite discoveries for 2015 and it’s already making a huge difference to my working day.

It’s a genius little app that plays ambient coffeeshop noise which according to a peer-reviewed study out of the University of Chicago, “is conducive to creative cognition.”

In a nutshell, this means being a tiny bit distracted helps you be more creative!

Whilst I am working I have this playing in the background with my Concentration Music Spotify Playlist and voila I have an instant coffee house feeling in my office!

It is available as an app for your smartphone and also via a desktop site. Check it out here

#3 Recruit An Accountability Buddy

Most poeple hate the thought of letting someone else down, so why not use it to your  advantage?

Recruit yourself an accountability buddy. This needs to be someone who you respect enough to accept challenge from and who won’t let you make poor excuses for not getting things done.

Each morning exchange a mini task list via text, email or good old fashioned paper.

As each of you completes a task you let the other know via a message until you have completed your list for the day. After a while a little competitive spirit may creep in and you’ll be surprised at how much you get done.

You can also add in forfeits for not completing tasks for a whole other dimension!

#4 Get 10 Minutes of Meditation

You don’t have to be a Yoga Master or Buddhist Monk and sit for hours in total silence to get the benefit of meditation.

Using a technique called Diaphramtic Breathing you can achieve the benefit of empting your mind, relaxing your body and recharge your brain in just 10 minutes!

Here’s how :

Sit upright in a straight-backed chair and place your hands in your lap.

Allow your shoulders to drop down and relax.

Now, without moving your shoulders or chest, take a slow, deep breath in.

Imagine that there’s a balloon inside your belly. When you breathe in, the balloon expands outward. And when you breathe out, the balloon collapses in toward your spine.

Concentrate on the movement of your belly rising and falling.

#5 Drink More Water

Grabbing a cup of your favourite java might sound like a good idea for perking up a flagging brain but  instead go for a glass of water.

Water gives the brain (which is about 85% water) the electrical energy for all functions, including thought and memory processes.

Dr. Corinne Allen, founder of the Advanced Learning and Development Institute, says that brain cells need twice the energy of other cells in the body. Water provides this energy more effectively than any other substance.

When your brain is functioning on a full reserve of water, you will be able to think faster, be more focused, and experience greater clarity and creativity.

#6 Put Some Omega 3 In Your Diet

Pay more attention to what you put in your mouth and you could improve what comes out of your brain.

Foods high in omega 3, such as oily fish (salmon, trout, mackerel, sardines), flax seeds and walnuts are great for improving concentration and motivation as they improve cognitive function, which means they help with the brains ability to think and process.

Keep some nuts or trail mix on your desk for your to snack on and put a little more thought into what goes into your lunch box.

Time to skip that Gregg’s sausage roll!

#7 Get 30 Minutes of Exercise In Every Day

A study in the International Journal of Workplace Health Management concluded that people who exercised during their workday were 23 percent more productive on those days than they were when they didn’t exercise.

Just 30 minutes of aerobic exercise will improve blood circulation and flow to the brain meaning that your thinking becomes clearer and sharper.

Published research found that after doing an easy half-hour bike ride, subjects completed a cognitive test faster than they did before exercising… and just as accurately. On top of that the brain-boosting effect lasted for at least 52 minutes after the ride.

#8 Take Regular Breaks

It might seem couter intuative to getting stuff done but a growing body of evidence shows that taking regular breaks from mental tasks improves productivity and creativity.

Just like any other muscle in your body, when the brain is subjected to long periods of activity it becomes fatigued and needs a rest period before it can recover.

Taking a few minutes break every 30 – 40 minutes to stretch, talk a little walk or simply look away from your screen can help to reenvigorate your thinking power

Could this be the modern day “Think and Grow Rich” ?

19th November 2014 by VParmar Leave a Comment

In 1937 Napoleon Hill published the book “Think And Grow Rich” which still to this day is changing the mindsets of people all over the world.

Napoleon Hill based his work on interviews with Andrew Carnegie, Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, and other millionaires of his generation to uncover what they did and how they did it.

Fast forward to 2014 and we could be about to see the modern day equivalent.

Based on extensive research and one-on-one interviews with more than 50 of the most legendary financial experts in the world – from Carl Icahn, to Warren Buffett, to Jack Bogle and Steve Forbes, Tony Robbins is launching a new book titled “Money: Master the Game: 7 Simple Steps To Financial Freedom”

I came across a this video of Tony being interview by Frank Kern.

Yes! I am a Tony fan but this is not his usual kind of video. There is no fist pumping, no euphoric crowd and no sign of “Zombie Nation”

This is video is something very different. It’s 90 minutes long but well worth the watch.

In this compelling interview Tony talks in depth about the 7 key steps from his findings as well as sharing 4 traits that these successful financial experts have in common. He also gives a sneak peak at the 9 financial lies we are told which keep us from achieve financial freedom.

Enjoy.

Some of the best advice I’ve ever got…

12th November 2014 by VParmar Leave a Comment

Ever since I was little I have been comfortable performing in front of people. Whether that was singing ‘any dream will do’ in a school production of Joseph, being part of a Bollywood dance group performing in front of hundreds or simply keeping my large entourage of cousins entertained at family events – I love being in front of people.

1d2cac869c01dcfff509d33bb68a72c9

The feeling of excitement and thrill of being on stage is what lured me into the world of public speaking. I watched other motivational speakers and thought to myself “I could do that!….I can perform like that”

That was the mistake I made. The bottom line is that great speakers don’t perform…they connect.

It was on a training camp in St Petersburg, Florida where I got one of the best pieces of advice on speaking that I have ever had.

Just a simple sentence transformed my public speaking and later the way I operate in everything I do.

“Vinay, it’s not about you…..it’s about them.” said my coach.

The trouble with being up on stage or at the front of the room is that you can get fooled into thinking it’s about you.

The truth is that it is not about you. It’s about them.

This isn’t just great advice for speaking.

As a presenter, speaker,  leader or even as a parent you must understand that your words  can change the world for the people listening forever.

“They will forget most of what you did and what you said but they will never forget how you made them feel”

That’s a huge responsibility and therefore it’s critical that you leave that ego at the door.

For all the time you’re listening to that inner voice that’s asking you: ” Will they like me?” “What if they disagree with me?” “Will I be better that the last speaker?” “What will they say about me later?” or “Will I get more business?” – you are putting a barrier in between you and them.

I’ll be honest I had to learn to leave my ego at the door.

I still get that little voice in my head from time to time but I have conditioned myself to get rid of it quickly.

When you are preparing a presentation, speech or talk remember that your primary goal is to connect to your audience. You have to engage them and that starts by you metaphorically going to where they are and bringing them to where you believe they should be.

Ego just gets in the way.

Here are 3 ways in which you can leave your ego at the door:

#1 Stop. Don’t flex.
sheru-classic-professional-bodybuilding-figure-championship-2011-pictures061

Remember when you where a kid and how nobody liked a show off? Well that’s something that we don’t really grow out of.

People don’t like having your achievements, credentials or metaphorical trophies paraded in front of them.

You are not there to flex your ‘muscles’, you are there to inspire and move your audience to believe that they can build bigger ‘muscles’ than you.

You may want to get your favourite story in about that time you bumped into Richard Branson at the airport and he told you were great or showcase your technical knowledge about how Google algorithms work, but ask yourself “Is it adding value to your audience or stroking your ego?”

Your job is to shine the light and focus on them.

#2 Surround yourself with humble people.

I think it was who once said Jim Rohn “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”

Be careful whom you spend your time with. I’m not telling you to ditch your family and friends, I’m telling you to pay attention to who you hangout with the most.

There are all sorts of people who will blow smoke up your butt or massage your ego. If you listen to them too much, you’ll start to believe the hype. That’s a dangerous place to be in.

Instead find people who will keep you humble and your feet firmly planted on the floor. These people will support you and will not just tell you what they think you want to hear, they will give you honest, agenda free advice.

#3 Give yourself an A.
41L93kr0gML

Take a leaf out of Benjamin Zander’s book the Art of Possibility and give yourself an ‘A’.

I’m not asking you to take an exam. I’m saying that you need to let go of the desire to compare yourself to others.

When teaching music students Zander discovered that many of them were playing within themselves because they were more concerned about being technically correct and being top of the class more than anything else.

He found this pre-occupation with getting an “A” interfered with students truly connecting with their music and as a result they were holding back.

One year Zander started by telling his students that they had already gotten an “A” but the only condition was that they had to write a letter to him dated a year ahead starting with “Dear Mr Zander, I got my ‘A ‘ because…..”

Imagine if you gave your presentation from a position of already having been given a standing ovation, 10/10 on your feedback charts and with glowing testimonials.

How differently would you feel? How much less chatter would there be in your mind?
